General TBE Forum > 'stonewall penalty'
Yup - I agree... but more than the comment being an irrelevant missuse its actually misleading .... Stonewalling as a noun would be to employ some sort of non confrontational delaying tactic ( as per Gen Stonewall Jackson I assume) but how this fits in with conceeding or winning a penalty God only knows. If a team was running the clock down when drawing and deliberately not attacking then this may be a coherent application of the term stonewall in a footy game.

Yeah thats right, stonewall pen is rubbish, its got to be ' nailed on pen' for me.

Never understood that term either, but after the history/literacy lesson provided by tarquin and scotty it seems it can be added to the endless list of ridiculous phrases used by commentators/pundits. I love watching football but there are very few commentators or pundits i have any time for. I used to reserve most of my animosity for Alan Green and whilst he remains my least favourite, he is certainly not alone.

Another one has now crept in,you no longer play up front you now play up 'top'

I heard this phrase (stonewall penalty) about 5 times this weekend and cringed every time i heard it. Andy Gray also used the phrase playing 'up top' about five times on his own. Good observations boys.

when is this ridiculous phrase going to be discontinued?! i have heard it four times already in the first half of the england game... it means nothing in this context! stonewall is either a type of wall construction popular in northwest england and wales, a gay rights campaign group or the nickname of a US civil war confederate general. what has is ever had to do with football penalties? complete nonsense spouted by illiterate, ill-trained and ignorant pundits. Grrrrrrr
