General TBE Forum > Seal a bath

Hi I've posted on here before and I was wondering how easy it is to seal a bath? It is already sealed but I have noticed it has turned black in places and looks like it is coming away from the bath.

Is it easy to seal? The TV adverts make it look easy, but I dont want to make a mess of the place

Thanks

Its mostly in the preparation. Get a good sharp scraper (or stanley knife blade) to remove all of the old sealant - can be a bit tedious but needs to be a thorough job. Especially if its a plastic / GRP / acryllic bath it is important to fill the bath with water before before sealing (as the bath flexes a bit (some more than others) it simulates the weight of water and /or person in the bath during use and ensures the seal is not unduly tugged / stretched when the bath is in use) filling to about 3/4 of the way to the overflow should be about right . If its a white bath and white or light tiles its a lot easier to get a neat looking seal - once you have applied the seal smooth it down (within a minute or so) with a suitable tool - many people will just use a finger but there are proper tools available. Once it is smoothed it will skin over so don't try going over it lots of times. If you are a perfecionist or the bath or tiling is a significantly different colour to the selant you should consider using masking tape to define the edge of the seal. If I do this I find tthat there may be a bit of a raised edge to the seal once the tape is removed so to get round this remove thge tape immediately after the initial smoothing and very lightly re-smooth with a clean fat finger to flatten the edge left by the masking tape. Then leave with the water still in the bath for 24hrs without getting the seal wet and you should be sorted.

Good Luck and let us know when you are done !

Hi Scotty thanks!!
I was considering getting my dad to do it, but now with your instructions I think I'm brave enough hehe

Watch this space... I'll get back to you once I'm done
