Plumbing Forum > underfloor cold water pipes
I've recently heard of several people who've had pipes burst/leak and then had to excavate their whole floor.
then who ever fitted the pipework done it wrong and against water regs.
i always put the main pipework in the floor , less chance of it being drilled into or coming in to contact with your cables for you wall sockets.
any pipe that is placed into a screed floor must be either sleeved or in a duct or can be layed in the screed but must be protected by impermeable tape.
i use ducts like it a lot easyer and can always be accessed if needed.
it must also be insulated over its full length if in a duct.
this all complys with water regs.
if hes a qualified plumber then he will have his water regs and do it right.
thanks....helps aot
do you always use plastic pipe in the ground hi-spec or are you happy to go with the copper?
very rare i use plastic pipe. useally only use plastic pipe if im doing a shower and running two pipes across the loft where it may be tight access or not ideal for soldering then change back to copper for the drop downs in the wall.
i've never used plastic in walls/floors
and i always use compression fittings rather than pushfit fittings on plastic.
not that im against plastic it just looks ugly when clipped to a wall or behind basins.

We are renovating the house and as such we are adding a kitchen in the new extension and downstairs bathroom. This will require new plumbing ofcourse. My question is should we get the plumber to lay the pipes in the floor or along the walls.
I've recently heard of several people who've had pipes burst/leak and then had to excavate their whole floor. Surely its safer on the wall where access is easier, no? or are there other considerations/ advantages/disadvantages?
I'd be grateful for any advice
thanks
