Linda - from your description this does sound like the overflow. Simply needs pipeweld to seal it (solvent weld pipe cement) which is usually under £5.

I have water flowing back out of an open pipe under the kitchen sink. As you look at the sink it the pipe to the left at the top. It open so I'm assuming it an overflow. When suds go down the plughole they come out this pipe. and down into the press underneath. I'm wondering should this pipe be open or shuld it be sealed off. I only noticed this at the weekend and it must have been happening for a while. The kitchen was build last year. There is no blockage and the water is running straight out and down the drains.
