Plumbing Forum > Flush

Good evening,

I have a prolem with the flush in my bathroom. On occassions it makes a very loud vibrating noise when i flush it, but not always.

A friend told me i have a closed couple cistern(?!) but could not explain what was causing this or how to amend it.

Thanks kindly for any assistance provided

Good evening Joan,

Start by replacing the washer in the fill valve (ballvalve / floatvalve) which should be straightforward - cost less than £1( all good hardware shops/ DIY sheds/ Plumbing tradecounters)...no special tools required, just remember to turn the water off at the stoptap first (or service valve if there is one fitted)and adjust the water level after changing the washer. If the problem is only recent then this will most probably cure the problem as the current washer has probably started to break down which means that the water supply into the cistern is not shutting off cleanly. If this does not fix the problem then let us know and we can start talking about water hammer (causes and cures)

Good Luck... let us know how you get on.

PS. 'close coupled' just means that the cistern is attached directly to the WC pan as opposed to 'low level' (cistern attached by short flushpipe) or 'high level' ( long flushpipe - cistern above head height), the type of cistern does not determine what type of fill valve is fitted.

Good morning Scotty,

Thanks kindly for the assistance and info. It's actually been like this for quite a while now. My son is going to change the washer and hopefully that will help. Otherwise i will be back to discuss it further.
