Plumbing Forum > Problem with gas cooker
could be the thermostat, there will likely be local appliance engineers who cover all makes , I would try one of those first as the SMEG only engineer will undoubtedly be more expensive . Before he calls though you could get your model number and search online for the spare part yourself - would give you an idea of whether hes trying to rip you off . Out of a matter of interest does the flame look healthy when first on or a bit feeble / yellow ? If its a healthy flame but its reducing too soon ( ie at approx 100 degs) I think the thermostat is the likliest.
Good luck... fish and chip takeaway tonight then !!
Cheers Scotty, someone else told me it might be the thermostat. I've never heard of local appliance engineers though, so that's a big help.
The only thing is i tried to use the oven again today and it appeared to work and judging on the light that indicates the temperature it was heating up to the desired temperature again. Is this posible? Maybe it is faulty but will work intermitently. I think i'll still get it looked at.
Cheers
Update on the cooker problem.
The problem reoccured and i couldn't get the temperature above 100. My missus tried switching it from fan oven to normal oven and then it worked fine. Does this suggest it is not the thermostat as i can't see why having the fan on would affect whether the thermostata worked or not?!
I still need to get an appliance engineer out but haven't had the opportunity yet.
Cheers
ok - fan ovens have an element in the rear of the oven and a fan in front of it that ensures the heat gets evenly distributed... generally speaking the elements are fairly compact and circul;ar in shape. If the oven operates separetly as a non-fan oven it may have conventional elements also which will usually be one at the top and one at the bottom of the oven cavity ( the top one sometomes doubles up as a grill element.). Is it possible that your fan is not working ? If this is the case the fan oven element will get too hot (as the heat is not being drawn away by the fan) and cut off until cooled down - hence the cavity never gets too hot.... I'm not saying this is defo the case - just thinking out loud as it were but it may be worth checking the fan is whirring ok.
Anyway in this weather you should be using a barbie or crunching on salad.
scrub what I just said - forgot it was a gas fan oven !!
Shame, when i read your first post i thought what perfect sense it made! I'm getting someone out at the end of the week so will let you know what the problem is.
Salads it is then, as i don't have a bbq sadly.

This is not a plumbing question as such but hoping someone might be able to help.
I have a smeg gas cooker which was installed about 2 years ago. I've had no problems with it until now. I was using the oven a couple of times this week to cook my dinner and both times it took much longer than normal to cook the food (lasagne one day, breaded chicken fillets and chips the next if you're interested in details). After further investigation i noticed the oven wasn't heating up above about 100 degrees. The gas hobs are all still working.
Could someone please advise what is wrong with the cooker.
Also who would i get to fix it? I don't think it is in warranty. I'm assuming a plumber would not be able to fix this. Would there be a smeg engineer i should talk to?
Cheers guys
