Plumbing Forum > Unvented tank and boiler

Hello,

I have been advised by Britsh Gas to have a system boiler and unvented cylinder fitted in my house, I'm not using them as they are SO expensive. What I'd like to know is what equipment I need to buy (what size cylinder, boiler, pumps and valves for the heating and some sort of expansion vessel etc) before I call a plumber around to fit it. I have a 4 bedroom house, about 10-12 rads, and 3 bathrooms.

Thanks

The way you are going i very much doubt you'll get anyone round to fit it.

1. that info don't give me any ideals what is needed for your system. a visit is needed by any engineer.
2. your mains pressure needs checking for pressure/flow it may well be to low for a unvented cylinder.
3. many installers will only fit the boilers/cylinders that they are familiar with.
4. you'll be very lucky to get an installer to fit parts you have supplied from ebay or any cheap outlet.
5. you have no warranty on parts from the installer that you supply and he fits.
6. long term you won't save any money by budgeting on the parts and getting them yourself
7.any installer gets a sniff of you wanting a cheap job with cheap parts will useally just leave the job.

so just do yourself a favour get a few people round to give quotes tell you what they recommend for the set up and go from their.

cutting costs on this type of work don't pay off long term.

Advice as per Hi spec .

Also remember though that BG are not the dogs do dahs that they think they are and just because they have advised one thing does not mean thats the best solution. Get at least 2 or 3 more Heating engs to have a look an give you quote - preferably use trademen who are local to you and come on recommendation from friends or neighbours. You can expect most local / smaller businessess to be circa 60 -70% of the BG price. Just remember that many local tradesmen will be ex BG and will often have more experience an expertise than your average BG chap !!

And (just to re-iterate Hi Specs view) - definately leave the sourcing of the mateials to the installer.
