Electrical Forum > Lighting Earth

My Lighting Circuit in the house is all 2 Core Cable. I have just bought a new light for my dining room and on opening the instructions it says the light needs to be earthed yet there is no earth wire in any of the light roses. Can anybody tell me what i need to do or should i get a sparky in?

Hello

3 things you can do here
1. Rewire the lighting circuit.
2. Run an earthwire from the light fitting back to the fuse box.
3. Take the fitting back and replace it with a plastic pendant or a light fitting that does not require an earth. These will have a symbol on the box or on the instructions of a square within a square (double insulated).

Best get a sparks in. You know the job has been done correctly then especially with options 1 and 2

A metal fitting must be earthed. If a fault gets onto the metal parts and it is not earthed it will stay there until you touch it. You will then get an electric shock.

Hope this helps

Cheers

I am an electrician in kingston, I had the same problem with a job i recently finished.
I think as long as you have plastic back boxes and accessories this is fine.
Like above you do have other potions but it involves more time and money, possible circuit rewire.

i think. you don't sound very competent.
whats the plastic boxes got to do with earthing the light. no good if you touch the light fitting and get a belt the plastic boxes won't save you.

you need abit more training. wouldn't let you near a electrical job with a 10ft barge pole.
