This could be a number of things
loose connection at the fitting
Loose connection at the pull cord
or you are not screwing the lamp in enough. As they age it can get harder to screw the lamp in to make a good connection. Try giving it an extra tweak

Thanks Deans, I think it might be somnthing to do with the way I have screwed it in. I'll try taking it out and doing it again.

I have four ceiling lights in my bathroom and I have just replaced one of the lamps as I thought it was blown (its a standard screw in bulb, not the halogen ones) but it now has decided to flicker at me and still not work correctly.
Does this mean there is a loose connection? It likes to go on, then flick, then die.
