The Building Experience DIY Forum > Light Fittings

Hi, new here, just moved house and want to replace the light switches - is this something I can do myself or will I need to get an electrician in?

Also, anyone know anywhere I can buy a load of switches cheap-ish? Just looking for standard simple white ones...

Thanks!

Hi Senoja, welcome.

It might be worth putting this on the Electrical forum as there might be a few electricians who will be able to offer you advice, but they might not check the DIY forum.

I got all my switches from B&Q. I was advised to look on the internet though. Screwfix will be a good place to start and there are also a numbr of specific electrical wholesale websites that might be good.

Senoja,

in specific answer to your question about whether you need to get an electrician in you are able to change light switches and fittings yourself. Tthere are limits on what a DIY'er is allowed to do without notifying the local building control authority ( so you should get further advice and clarification if you are planning anything more advanced (eg.changes to the fixed wiring)) but swapping switches is ok so long as you are confident you can do it correctly.

Good luck and keep us posted - if you don't post back I'll assume youv'e electrocuted yourself !

Ps Screwfix is cheaper than mostof the DIYsheds like B&Q

Thanks guys! I've not electrocuted myself yet! Will start shopping around for them tonight, really glad there's a screwfix not far away, moving house is manic!!

Hi i had a similar problem and i posted it on a price comparison work site called http://www.1lessjob.com. the local professionals were very helpfull and i got an insight on how much it was going to cost me, in the end the price was so resonable i got one to do the full lot. its a free service so it didnt cost anything, its free for trademen too to help em get more work... hope this helps
