The Building Experience DIY Forum > Direction of Electrical Wiring in UK

I am putting up some bookshelves but the ideal spot for drilling is directly above an electrical socket.

I once heard that in the UK wiring goes vertically downwards from a socket and upwards from a lightswitch - seems logical as the socket is near the floor.

Can anyone confirm this please?

TIA

useally yes just remove the socket front and check which way the cables enter the back box

Great, thanks

Just be carefull... especially depending on how old the house is , if its very recent build then yes the cabiling should be straight vertical drops but it may be worth gettting a voltage detector to double check that the cable is where you think it is . Older houses often have cable runs in walls at all manner of angles !!
