useally yes just remove the socket front and check which way the cables enter the back box

Just be carefull... especially depending on how old the house is , if its very recent build then yes the cabiling should be straight vertical drops but it may be worth gettting a voltage detector to double check that the cable is where you think it is . Older houses often have cable runs in walls at all manner of angles !!

I am putting up some bookshelves but the ideal spot for drilling is directly above an electrical socket.
I once heard that in the UK wiring goes vertically downwards from a socket and upwards from a lightswitch - seems logical as the socket is near the floor.
Can anyone confirm this please?
