Smiths Electrical Services

Trade - Electrical

Typical works performed - Domestic and commercial installations Testing and maintenance, fault finding, Periodic inspections and land lord certificates Part P registered

You’re Name - Barry Smith

You’re Role/Position - Owner

Trading Area -  Essex and North Kent but occasionally further afield

Number of years trading - Three years but with 45 years experience

Number of Employees - Two

Perks of the job - Variety of work and meeting people

Downsides of the job - Working in very dirty lofts

Biggest challenge facing your company/industry - Increasing amount of legislation and paperwork which is not rigorously enforced so that those tradesmen that comply with the law are at a competitive disadvantage to those who do not

Funniest moment - When I was an apprentice the electricians mate was attempting to fix a socket outlet to a wall which was in very poor condition and eventually managed to secure it by the use of four inch long screws. Only to discover later that the wall was only two inches thick and that his socket was actually fixed to the bed side cabinet on the other side of the wall

Scariest moment - Entering a plant room on a factory roof and only discovering after the door had slammed shut that there was no handle on the inside. I managed to escape by dismantling a set of filters and crawling through into the next compartment where the door had an internal handle. Many of the people I have told this story would probably think this is the funniest moment

How you advertise/market the business - Mostly by recommendation

What sets your company apart - The person doing the work is the person qualified to do the job and not a supervisor who only occasionally shows up. We also have experience in listed buildings and many other types of property

Anything else - Many people can make lights and sockets work but you would be amazed how many of these are unsafe which may cause electric shock or fire
