Building Forum > Flat roof system
I've heard good things about fibreglass (GRP) based systems ... my mate (whose a novice) did a garage roof a few months back and although it cost about 50% more for the materials than a felt system it looks pretty robust and is apparently guaranteed for 30 years... got the impression it was fairly time consuming though so seem builders maybe put off for tis reason.... might be worth looking into ??

what about lead, looks beautiful and lasts a long time

Just don't lay lead if there are any pikeys about !!

If you live close to the sea wind could be a problem using lead trays,as its the only the weight of the lead holding it down.they soon peel back if wind gets under them.Use the felt system ,decking down ,then underlay felt with a top mineral caping sheet.

not giving up on the lead, see the calder website rob for all you need to know about lead clips!

Thanks for your comments - unfortunately lead is totally out of our budget! We have been advised by our architect to look at zinc (also expensive) or Trocal? does anyone have any experience of this?

Hi Pippa
Have you considered EPDM Rubber roofing membranes. They are relatively cheap and very easy to install unlike GRP and will also last 50+ years. Most good builders/roofers will be able to install this for you. The wind uplift on these membranes is pretty good especially the re-inforced self adhesive membranes that are impossible to remove once stuck!
Check out www.rubber4roofs.co.uk They sell three systems. I think the "Self-Adhesive" system would be perfect for your project.

Does anyone out there have any experience of the different flat roofing systems available these days? We are planning a single storey extension and our architect has recommended either zinc or Trocal. Both of these are expensive, but as we live very close to the sea on the west coast we don't want to skimp and find ourselves in trouble as soon as it starts to blow! Any advice would be very welcome.
