Building Forum > Builders ruined carpet

My builders took an old ceiling down and there was a huge amount of dirt and the carpet is ruined. I can not get all the dirt out so will have to get new carpet. They did no warn me this might happen. Would this be included in making good and be paid for by the builders or will i have to pay the bill?

don't pay their bill for the work done, don't sign no paperwork,
or if you've paid claim off their public liability insurance.

Why didn't they cover the floor before hand?
This seems like an obvious conclusion to taking a ceiling down... the floor is bound to get dirty!

I agree with hi-spec totally.

100% agree with the Hi spec and Charlie. They sound like they have cut some corners here - experience should have led them to sheet the whole area - not just that room but also all access routes to the room or better still remove all carpets and soft furnishings in all rooms the dust could get to.
It is possible of course that they have no PL cover or if they do there may be a large excess for them to pay ( typically the first £250 or even £500) so they may be reluctant to admit fault - thats their lookout though and should not be put off laying the responsibility for soting the mess squarely with them

I am hoping you have a good relationship with these guys.

Good luck

sometimes Lizette you have to be philosophical about these minor traumas, one thing i always bear in mind is the old saying

"you cant make an omellete without breaking a few eggs"

"you cant make an omellete without breaking a few eggs"

Tarquin this is hardly an omellete... where would you draw the line? "Sorry I blew your house up as I thought I knew about Gas connection but I got it wrong sorry".

i agree, i think if the house blew up it would not be like an omellete, more likely you end up with scrambled eggs

Hey Tarquin ...

Shouldn't it be the builder who has to look it philosophicaly ?

There is another old saying...

" Thats what insurance is for"

Fortunately i do have a good relationship with the builders, but in a way that makes it more difficult. In their defence they did put sheets down and had a go at clearing it up themselves as even they were surprised about the amount of mess that was created. I also think i may have indicated i may replace the carpets at some stage which might have made them a little more carefree. They have done a good job on the whole and i don't want to fall out with them, but i wanted to see what the situation was with regard to making good and it does sound like they should be responsible.

Thank you all for help.
